
The immigration of Vietnamese into Cambodia is a sensitive topic which has been debated and shared on social media for years. Recently, a Facebook user posted two photos showing people camp at an unknown location. The Facebook user claimed they are Vietnamese immigrants camping along border Cambodia. The photo with such a claim had been shared thousand times by Khmer-speaking social media users within hours. After running Google Reverse Image, however, it is found the claim is false.
Social Media Claim
Two photos were posted on Facebook on July 6, 2021 by a social media user who claimed the photos show Vietnamese immigrants were sent to station along Cambodia’s border.
The photos with such a claim had been shared more than 1,000 times by Khmer-speaking Facebook users along with a mixture of comments and reactions as well. The photos and the caption were also shared to different social media groups which have hundred thousand Facebook accounts members.
Below is a capture of the post with caption read: “The danger for our nation arrives now. Please rise up Khmer. Vietnam’s leaders have sent their people to camp along Cambodia’s border in Svay Rieng province. Vietnamese authorities said this is just for prevent Covid-19 spreading. Our Cambodian people said Vietnamese have stationed along hundred kilometers of Cambodia’s border, but no Cambodia’s authority dare to speak out.”

Fact Crescendo Cambodia begins checking the claim above by running Google Reverse Image – leading us to the photos and information of them.
These photos were found in the archive of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) with information saying the photos show Cambodian refugees had lived in Nong Chan camp in Thailand after they fled from Vietnam’s attack in 1980.

The photos are among many photos showing Cambodian refugees who had lived in refugee camps in Thailand after Vietnam invaded Cambodia and overthrow the government of Democratic Kampuchea or the Khmer Rouge in early 1979.
The photos and many photos pooled in the archive were taken by Jean-Jacques Kurz.

Fact Crescendo Cambodia found out the claim with photos above is false. The photos are not Vietnamese immigrants who had camped along Cambodia’s border in this year. The photos taken by Jean-Jacques Kurz show Cambodian refugees stayed in Nong Chan camp in Thailand in 1980.
