Prime Minister Hun Sen has been a hotbed of rumors, criticism and accusations in politics for many years. Meanwhile, photos attached with a claim that Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen, has just been killed were posted and spread across social media in Cambodia recently. These posts were reacted with mixed comments and shared by Khmer-speaking social media users. However, after reviewing his official Facebook page, it proves that the claim above was false.

This is about our investigation of this photo attached with the claim.

Social Media Claim

On January 26, 2022, one of the Facebook users posted three photos, in which published and claimed that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen was assassinated at 5 o'clock. The photo with this post was shared several times, along with mixed reactions and expressions from Facebook users who are speaking Khmer.

The following is the screenshot captured from the Facebook user’s post which translates in English as “If this news is really good, I'm ready to party with our Cambodian people all over the world”.

The above claim was also published on the news media website called Kamsan Khmer 4 years ago, under the title “Surprise: Samdech Techo Hun Sen was assassinated at 5 this morning”.

Fact Check

Fact Crescendo Cambodia has started verifying this claim by checking the recent posts on the official Facebook page of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and official government press releases published by state and private media in Cambodia for the last few days.

News of the death of a country's leader should be officially announced by government agencies, both the public and private media, and by means of major media outlets.

However, according to the official Facebook page of Prime Minister Hun Sen, posted on January 26, 2022 recently, the video meeting of Mr. Hun Sen and the leader of Myanmar, Mr. Min Aung Lang talks about finding a solution to the crisis in Myanmar. The following is an excerpt from Hun Sen's Facebook page which translates in English as “On January 26, 2022, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, received video meeting with His Excellency General Min Aung Hlaing, Senior Leader of Myanmar to continue to discuss a solution to the crisis in Myanmar”.

The above meeting was also reported by VOA on January 26, 2022. The following is an excerpt from the VOA website which stated in Khmer and translated in English as “Cambodian Minister Hun Sen (left) and Myanmar military leader Min Aung Hlaing during their online video meeting at the Prime Minister's Office in Takhmao City, Kandal Province, Cambodia on the 26th January 2022”.

The Fact Crescendo Cambodia team also found a photo of the man sleeping in a serum and relaxing in the house, which is actually known as Tea Vinh. This photo was posted on August 21, 2017 on his Facebook page with a caption which translates in English as “The grandchildren came to see their grandfather who got a little sick”.

Conclusion

Fact Crescendo Cambodia has found that the photos attached with the claim made by the above users are false. This photo actually is Tea Vinh when he was curing at home and the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen is still alive as usual and he also appeared in a meeting with General Min Aung Hlaing on January 26, 2022.
