After a 40-hectare plot of land in Kampong Chhnang province was granted to Vietnamese immigrants in a bid to move them out of floating communities in Tonle Sap Lake in late 2019, many photos circulated on social media had been linked to this issue. Then, a composited picture of two photos overlaid with the phrases “houses for Vietnamese” compared to “houses for Cambodians” was uploaded on social media. The picture had been widely shared and commented on by many social media users. After running a Google Reverse Image Search, however, it proves the picture was falsely linked to the immigration issue.

Social Media Claim

A picture composited of two photos showing houses built from bricks and rubble of houses on the ground was circulated on social media two weeks ago. One of the photos was overlaid with a phrase saying “nice houses for Vietnamese” compared to rubble of houses of a Cambodian villager.

The post compared houses built for Vietnamese immigrants in a 40-hectare plot of land in Kampong Chhnang province and compared to houses of a Cambodian family.

The picture had been widely shared, and many social media users had commented on and reacted to the social media claim.

Below is the capture of the post circulated by a Facebook page named Politically of Cambodia on October 11 this year.

Fact Check

Fact Crescendo Cambodia began a fact check over the post by running a Google Reverse Image Search which led us to find out the truth as below.

The houses built in the same style were found in a report of the Cambodia Property Report that was published about three years ago. The report said the houses were built for veterans and families of soldiers who dedicated their lives to the country. The houses had been constructed in various provinces across the country.

The same photo was also publicly circulated on the web portal of the Ministry of Land Management, Urbanization and Construction in December 2019. The web portal said the houses were built in part of the Cambodian government’s social welfare project in different provinces.

The full story of the report can be seen through a link available here. Below is a capture of a photo of houses built by the Cambodian government for its social welfare.
