A video clip showing the floodwaters flooding a residential area was posted on social media a few days ago, claiming it was a recent earthquake disaster in Japan.
The video attached to this post has been shared thousands of times, with mixed reactions and comments from social media users who are speaking Khmer.
Below is the full video clip posted on social media on January 2, 2024. A 7.4-magnitude earthquake shook Shunoto, Ishikawa, Japan, at around 4:10 p.m., and the Meteorological Department issued a warning of 5 meters for big waves.
Fact Check
Fact Crescendo Cambodia reviewed and verified the above claim through the Google Reverse Image Search process, which led to the following facts:
The exact same video clip was found and posted on YouTube in 2015. It was described as a tsunami disaster in Ishinomaki prefecture, Miyagi prefecture, Japan, on March 11, 2011.
A 9-magnitude earthquake shakes Tohoku prefecture in eastern Japan. Giant tsunami waves are up to 40.5 meters high. The tsunami has killed about 20,000 people and wreaked havoc on infrastructure.
Below is the full video of the tsunami disaster that struck Japan in 2011. It was posted on YouTube on May 31, 2015.
The same video clip was also posted on Dailymotion four years ago, describing the video as a part of a tsunami that struck Ishinomaki nearly 13 years ago.
