Two weeks ago, Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen paid a controversial visit to Myanmar where he met the country’s junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing who has ruled the nation for almost a year following a coup d'état overthrowing the elected government. Days after his visit, an image showing PM Hun Sen exchanging a big framed photo with General Min Aung Hlaing was posted on social media. The photo contains a picture of PM Hun Sen and Min Aung Hlaing in military hats. The image has been multiple shared by Khmer-speaking social media users along with a mixture of comments. After running Google Reverse Image, however, it proves the image was altered.

Two days after PM Hun Sen’s visit to Myanmar, a Facebook user posted one of the images showing Cambodia’s premier exchanging a big framed photo with Myanmar junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing. The photo they held shows the picture of them wearing military hats.

The image posted in an album of images has been shared many times by Khmer-speaking Facebook users, leading to a mixture of comments and reactions.

Below is a capture of the image posted by the Facebook user along with a caption read: “After their meeting in Burma, Hun Sen and Min Aung Hlaing become brothers who share happiness and sadness together as flesh and blood… […]”

Fact Crescendo Cambodia began checking the image by running Google Reverse Image which led us to see an original image posted on the official Facebook page of premier Hun Sen.

On his official Facebook page named Samdech Hun Sen, Cambodian Prime Minister, we see many images showing Cambodia’s leader meeting and taking photos together. One of the images shows PM Hun Sen and General Min Aung Hlaing exchanging a big framed photo containing a picture of both leaders standing for taking a picture together. The photo was exchanged at the receipt dinner hosted by General Min Aung Hlaing.

PM Hun Sen as ASEAN Chair this year led Cambodia’s highest delegates to pay a two-day visit to Myanmar from 7 to 8 January, in a bid to find a solution for Myanmar’s crisis following a coup toppling the elected government led by Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
