Gasoline and diesel prices in Cambodia have been rising steadily since mid-October, with regular petrol now costing about 4,500 riels. This rising price of gasoline is becoming a hot topic and debate on social media with the posting of comics. Meanwhile, a photo showing a car flipped over the roof in the front yard of a gas station was posted on Facebook recently. They are attached with the claim stating it has fainted when it saw the price of gasoline. This claim was reacted with many shares and comments by the Facebook users who are speaking Khmer. However, after running a Google Reverse Image search, it proves that the photo attached with the claim posted by the user is satirical.

This is about our investigation of this photo.

Social Media Claim

On February 7, 2022, one of the Facebook users posted a photo into a Facebook group called “Talking About Car (TAC)”, showing a car flipped at a gas station. The same user did not confirm the location or detail of this mentioned incident while this claim has been shared and mixed reactions hundreds of times by Facebook users recently.

The following screenshot was captured from a Facebook user’s post above which translates in English as “A car suddenly fainted when it saw the price of gasoline​”.

Fact Check

Fact Crescendo Cambodia had started to check and verify this photo directly by running a Google Reverse Image search, which brought us to the sources containing the following photos.

Photos of the same shape and shape were found on the Manchester Evening website published on the 13th January 2022. The Manchester Evening News is a regional daily newspaper covering Greater Manchester in Northwest England, founded in 1868. This news media stated in English that an incident occurred along the Church Road, Cheadle Hulme in England. The same website does not confirm that this incident happened because of the rise in gasoline prices in Cambodia at all.

The following is an image captured from the website above written in English as “Woman in her 60s miraculously escapes with no injuries after shocking car flip”.

The above website also added in English that​ “On Wednesday (January 12) police were called to Church Road, Cheadle following reports of an accident involving a car that had rolled over in the area. A woman in her 60s, who was the only person in the vehicle, was checked over by ambulance and was found to have no injuries”.​

Similarly, according to the website 9WEB published on January 12, 2022, it also published another photo with a different angle of the overturned car and added in English as “Overturned car at BP gas station, Church Road, Cheadle Hulme”.

Conclusion

Fact Crescendo Cambodia found that the photos and claims by the above Facebook users were satirical. This photo shows a car flipped happened in BP gas station, Church Road, Cheadle Hulme, England. This does not relate to raising gasoline prices in Cambodia recently at all.
