As technology has advanced and evolved rapidly, it has also had an impact. It also affects users through various forms of deception. Recently, a message was sent asking users to click their link to verify their bank account. However, Fact Crescendo Cambodia’s fact-finding found that the above claim was a scam.

This is about our investigation of this claim.

Social Media Claim

A few days ago, there was a distribution of a message and a link asking users to click on the link within 24 hours to verify their bank account; otherwise, the account balance of those users would be frozen or blocked.

Below is a snapshot of a user’s phone receiving a message from an anonymous person.

Fact Check

Fact Crescendo Cambodia questioned whether this was true and began to verify the truth through the latest and most reliable clarifications from Acleda Bank and the Anti-Cyber Crime Department of Cambodia.

On March 7, 2024, ACLEDA Bank’s official Facebook page explained and informed its customers that it is involved in cases of sending fake messages in an attempt to obtain users' bank account information.

ACLEDA Bank also confirmed that its bank staff will not contact customers and inquire about their account numbers or personal information via SMS.

The following is an image from the Facebook page above that reads, “If you have received immediate requests for personal information to access a bank account, request an ID number, or confirm your bank account information, please do not click on the link provided or reply and provide absolutely personal or account information”.

Similarly, the above case was also published on the Business Cambodia website, which states that ACLEDA Bank has no request for users to click on the link to verify the bank account by text message within 24 hours.

On March 5, 2024, the Anti-Cyber Crime Department of Cambodia also reminded the public that, for general use, all suspicious links are not safe, and please do not click on any links without a clear source as it will lead to other risks as well.

In the past, the Department of Technology Crimes has also reported many cases of fraud online, including recently announced and disseminated phishing links to users of technology.

  • Do not share your password with anyone.
  • Keep your personal information secure.
  • Do not click on suspicious links.

Fact Crescendo Cambodia finds that a message asking users to verify their bank account within 24 hours is not false. In fact, there is no request for users to click on the link to verify the bank account by text message, and the Anti Cyber Crime Department has found that such a message is a hoax.
