While the Water Festival is always held every year, many photos show the beautiful decoration of the boat and the lanterns on the occasion of the Water Festival, which were posted on social media by a Facebook user. However, Fact Crescendo Cambodia found that the photos posted on Facebook were altered.

This is about our investigation over this post.

Social Media Claim

On November 26, 2023, a Facebook user posted four photos showing the boat parade. With a beautiful Khmer decoration on a river, these photos are attached to the celebration of the Water Festival, which took place on November 26, 27, and 28, 2023.

Such remarks were shared several times, along with mixed reactions and expressions from active Facebook users.

Below is a snapshot from the Facebook user above who wrote, “Really fresh. Very beautiful Cambodia in the era of peace. As a Cambodian child, I am very proud to see Cambodia make this kind of progress”.

Fact Check

Fact Crescendo Cambodia monitors and verifies these images through the Google Reverse Image Search process, which leads us to find the truth as follows:

Photos of the Royal Lantern Parade, Ministries, and Institutions have been found and posted on the Facebook Page of the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, on November 26, 2023, which did not show the view of decorating the boat and beautiful lanterns on the occasion of the Water Festival in Cambodia, as posted above.

Last November, the Fact Crescendo Cambodia team also verified a picture of a grandmother who was created by AI software but has been described by some social media users as a picture of the fact that she is up to 300 years old. See the full article here.

Conclusion

Fact Crescendo Cambodia has found that the photos posted by the users above are altered. These photos were created by artificial intelligence (AI) technology, not the actual scenes at all.
