After Russia launched a large-scale military invasion of Ukraine under the so-called special military operation, the distribution of photos, video clips, and information related to the event have been seen on social media, including Information, photos, and video clips that are quite confusing and inaccurate.
Meanwhile, a viral video clip showing jets being shot over the skies has been posted on social media in Cambodia recently. It is attached with a claim stating that Russia launches a battle with Ukraine. This claim has been shared and reacted to thousands of times by Facebook users who are speaking Khmer. However, after running a Google Reverse Image search, it proves that the video attached with the claim above is misleading.
This is about our investigation of this video.
Social Media Claim
On February 25, 2022, one of the Facebook pages called “Agricultural Equipment” posted a video clip of approximately 5 minutes and 30 seconds, showing the attack by the fighter jets. The same Facebook page claimed that it was a scene of Russian jets launching attacks on Ukraine. This claim has been shared and reacted to thousands of times by Khmer-speaking Facebook users recently.
The following video was taken from Facebook page’s post which was captioned in Khmer and translated in English as “Russia launches a battle with Ukraine”
Fact Check
Fact Crescendo Cambodia had started to check and verify this video directly by running a Google Reverse Video search, which brought us to the sources containing the following videos.
An exact video clip with the same format and shape was found on a Facebook page called Kakarot Gaming, which was broadcast live on February 20, 2022. The same Facebook page confirmed the information in the video in English as “Arma 3 CRAM defense vs Jets”.
Arma 3 is an open-world, realism-based, military tactical shooter video game developed and published by Bohemia Interactive exclusively through the Steam distribution platform. It was released for Microsoft Windows in September 2013 and later announced for macOS and Linux in August 2015. Arma 3 mainly takes place in the mid-2030s, on the fictional islands of Altis and Stratis in the Aegean Sea, and the South Pacific Island of Tanoa, as well as the island of Malden and a landlocked terrain set in the historical region of Livonia.
Also, according to the official Twitter account of Arma 3 video game published on February 25, 2022, recently called and confirmed in English that “Dear Arma Community! Beware that lately quite a few videos from heavily modded Arma games surfaced tagged as videos depicting the current Ukrainian conflict. We are in touch with the media helping to fact-check such videos”.
