Fact Check: Family Members Crying at Indonesia’s Airport Falsely Claimed in Cambodia
Life as a couple is not easy, apart from living in harmony with each other, we also need to be tolerant and keep the couple's private affairs quite well. Normally, a couple living together is like a plate in a cupboard, there are always arguments and incomplete things that should be discussed and talked to peacefully.
Meanwhile, a photo showing two people crying was published on news media recently. It was also attached with a claim saying in Khmer that this couple who have been married for 6 years and have no children, the husband decides to take his wife to the doctor, after the examination, the husband suddenly kneels down and asks for a divorce immediately. This viral news was reacted with mixed comments and reshared by many Facebook users. However, after running a Google Reverse Image search, it proved that the photo attached with the claim above was false.
This is about our investigation of this claim.
Social Media Claim
On August 22, 2021, one of the local news websites called Komsan Obsok published an article showing a photo of a man and a woman sitting and crying under the title which translates in English as “This couple has been married for six years, have no children, the husband decides to take a wife to the doctor and after the examination, suddenly the husband knelt down and asked for a divorce immediately”.
The claim attached to this photo was distributed and received a lot of mixed reactions from social media users.
The following screenshot is an excerpt from a local news website showing a man and a woman sitting and crying along with claim that they are a couple.

Similarly, one of the Facebook pages called Osja MV also shared the above information with this photo on October 17, 2021 recently.
Below is a snapshot captured from the above Facebook page that translates in English as “this couple who have been married for 6 years and have no children, the husband decides to take his wife to the doctor, after the examination, the husband suddenly kneels and asks for a divorce immediately”.
Fact Check
Fact Crescendo Cambodia had started to check and verify this photo attached with the claim directly by running a Google Reverse Image search, which brought us to the source containing the following information.
This exact photo has been found on a British privately owned stock photography agency launched in September 1999, Alamy. This website added that Indonesia AirAsia's Flight QZ8501, an Airbus A320-200, lost contact with air traffic control early on Sunday during bad weather on a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.

According to an international news organisation owned by Thomson Reuters, Reuters News Website, published on December 30, 2014, has also shown photos and scenes of the crying family members who lost their members on disappearance of AirAsia flight QZ8501. The following is an excerpt from the Reuters news story, written in English as “Family members of passengers onboard missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 cry at a waiting area in Juanda International Airport, Surabaya, Indonesia, December 30, 2014”.

Fact Crescendo Cambodia found that the photo attached with the above-mentioned claims was false. They were not a couple who have been married for 6 years and have no children. This photo was factually a moment when family members of passengers onboard missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 cry at a waiting area in Juanda International Airport, Surabaya in 2014.
