Protests against Burma's military government led by General Min Aung Hlaing after ousting government leader Aung San Suu Kyi Lottery in early February 2021 have always been discussed and shared on social media by social media users who are speaking Khmer. Meanwhile, photos showing a luxurious house were posted on Facebook. The photos are attached with the claim stating it was Min Aung Hlaing’s house. This claim was reacted with many shares by the Facebook users who are speaking Khmer. However, after running a Google Reverse Image search, it proves that the photo attached with the claim posted by the user is false.

This is about our investigation of this photo.

Social Media Claim

On March 29, 2021, one of the Facebook pages called Long OMC posted a photo of the luxurious mansion and claimed that it was the mansion of General Min Aung Hlaing. This post has been distributed with mixed reactions from Facebook users.

The following screenshot was captured from the Facebook page’s post which states in Khmer and translates in English as “Min Aung Hlaing’s luxurious house, got a house, property, and even wanted more power, ate only 3 times per day, was willing to let his own country melt/ destroy all around the city and countryside. The coup killed people every day, none stop”.

Fact Check

Fact Crescendo Cambodia had started to check and verify this photo directly by running a Google Reverse Image search, which brought us to the sources containing the following photos.

An exact photo with the same format above was found on a Twitter account named Cambodia's Eye on April 7, 2018. This has been confirmed and added in its own tweet that this mansion is the villa of the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, which is in the Tuol Krasang. The following is an image captured from the user account above written in English as “#Cambodia's PM Hun Sen's luxurious house in Toul Krasang”.

A photo of Prime Minister Hun Sen's mansion was also found and posted on an official Facebook page Sieng Nam on April 08, 2018. Mr. Sieng Nam is commonly known as a CPP lawmaker from Siem Reap province. He has stated in his remarks at the ceremony that the photo of this villa is the mansion of Prime Minister Hun Sen, located at Takhmao City, Kandal Province.

The following is an excerpt from Seang Nam's Facebook page translated in English as “on April 6, 2018, my wife and I came to attend the housewarming party and the 42nd wedding anniversary of Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Samdech Kittipritthbandit Bun Rany. This house is in Takhmao City, Kandal Province. On this occasion of the new year, on behalf of my family and myself, I wish both Samdechs longevity to lead a nation of peace and further development”.

Conclusion

Fact Crescendo Cambodia has found that the photos attached with the claim posted by the above Facebook page is false. This luxurious house does not belong to General Min Aung Hlaing. It is factually known as the Cambodia's PM Hun Sen's house located in Takhmao, Kandal province.
