Many photos and videos of natural landscapes have been posted and shared on social media, while some are hard to believe. A photo showing a beautiful hippo-shaped island was posted on a Facebook page recently. It was reacted with mixed comments and shared by many social media users. However, after running a Google Reverse Image, it proves that the photo above was altered.

This is about our investigation of this photo.

Social Media Claim

On February 20, 2022, one of the Facebook pages called Cambodia Life posted a photo showing an island that looks like a hippo. This has been reacted with mixed comments and reshared many times by Facebook users who are speaking Khmer on social media.

The photo above may be believed by some Facebook users to be a real photo. The following screenshot was captured from the Facebook page’s post which states in English as “Amazing Hippos”.

Fact Check

Fact Crescendo Cambodia had started to check and verify this photo directly by running a Google Reverse Image search, which brought us to the sources containing the following photos.

An exact photo of the same form and shape was found on the Shutterstock website, a global provider of stock photography, stock footage, and stock music, headquartered in New York. The following screenshot was captured from the above website which states in English as “Coron Island in the province of Palawan, Philippines”.

According to the Alamy website, it also provides details about the photo which states in English that “Kayangan lake or blue lagoon, Coron island, Philippines”. This does not show the exact shape of the hippo unlike social media posts.

Similar photos were also found on the Can Stock Photo website which also confirmed the location of this area in English as “View Of Kayangan Lake Lagoon On Coron Island, Busuanga Palawan Philippines”.

Conclusion

Fact Crescendo Cambodia has found that the photo posted and claimed by the above Facebook user was altered. It had been edited before it was posted on social media. This photo is known as Kayangan Lake which is located in Palawan, Philippines. This does not show the exact shape of the hippo unlike social media posts.
