Luo Meizhen Falsely Claimed as 257-Year-Old Japanese Granny

Meanwhile many people have lived on earth for more than 100 years; a photo depicting a granny was recently posted on a Facebook page, claiming she was turning 257 years old this year. This photo attached with the above claim has been shared with mixed reactions from many Facebook users who are speaking Khmer. After running Google Reverse Image and reviewing verifiable sources, however, it proves that the above claim is false.

This is about our investigation of this claim.

Social Media Claim

April 20, 2022, one of the Facebook pages called ក្រចេះខេត្តខ្ញុំ posted a photo showing an old granny along with the claim that she was Japanese who turned to 257 years old this year. This Facebook page did not add any further details about her name at all. This claim attached with the above photo has been shared and reacted with many mixed comments from Facebook users who are speaking Khmer recently.

The following image was captured from the above Facebook page writing in Khmer and translates in English as “This year, this Japanese grandmother is 257 years old. What other people in the world live as long as you? If you see her, please like & share and have a long life everyone”.

Fact Check

Fact Crescendo Cambodia had started to check and verify this photo directly by running a Google Reverse Image search, which brought us to the sources containing the following photos.

An exact photo of this old granny has been found on a news media website called Daily Mail published on September 05, 2012. This website has clarified and added that this old granny is known as Luo Meizhen who was born in Guangxi on 9 July 1885. The same website did not state she was Japanese who turned to 257 years old like the claim posted by the Facebook page at all.

Also, according to the China Daily news website published on October 20, 2010, it was also confirmed that this granny was named Luo Meizhen who was born in 1885 at Bama County of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, and was topped under China’s latest list of the 10 longest-living people.

Fact Crescendo Cambodia team also found that Luo Meizhen has passed away on June 13, 2013 at the age of 127-year-old. Her death was also reported in many news media.

Similarly, Kane Tanaka, the world’s oldest person, who was born on January 2, 1903, has died in Japan on April 19, 2022 at the age of 119. Her death has been reported and published worldwide recently. The above website also added that Guinness World Records said they were saddened to hear of Tanaka’s passing, and said the news of her death had been confirmed by senior gerontology consultant Robert Young, who also helped confirm her record as the oldest person alive back in 2019.

Fact Crescendo Cambodia has found out that the above claim attached with the photo posted by a Facebook page is false. ​This old granny was famously known as Luo Meizhen, a Chinese woman who has passed away in 2013 at the age of 127-year-old.
