Nowadays, social media is full of information, including factual information, false, bizarre, and even sad news that is widely shared and disseminated by users. Meanwhile, a photo showing two people crying was published on news media recently. It was also attached with a claim saying in Khmer that a crying father almost lost his liver after his dragon fish, which tried to breed for tens of thousands of dollars, had to melt away for a moment because of his child. This viral news was reacted with mixed comments and reshared by many Facebook users. However, after running a Google Reverse Image search, it proves that the photo attached with the claim above was false.

This is about our investigation of this claim.

Social Media Claim

On September 11, 2021, one of the local news websites called Komsan Obsok has published an article about the scene of two men crying. That photo is attached with the words, “Who is to blame? A crying father almost lost his liver after his dragon fish, which tried to breed for tens of thousands of dollars, disappeared and gone because of his children”.

Similarly, another Facebook page called Sdach Reading has also shared the above information with this photo on October 15, 2021, recently. This post has been reacted to over 3.2K likes and over 153 shares.

Fact Check

Fact Crescendo Cambodia had started to check and verify this photo attached with the claim directly by running a Google Reverse Image search, which brought us to the source containing the following information.

The exact photo of this was found on the Daily Mail news website which had been published on September 17, 2020. It was the moment of reunion between elderly Chinese parents and their son, who went missing 38 years ago. It shows the scene of parents hugging and crying.

The following is an excerpt from the Daily Mail website that shows an exact photo with a caption written in English as “This is the touching moment two elderly Chinese parents are reunited with their long-lost son 38 years after he was abducted. Emotional footage shows the family breaking down in tears”.

According to another news website called The Sun which was published on September 18, 2020, also revealed a Chinese family reunites with their son in abduction 38 years ago as well. The following is an excerpt from The Sun news website in English as “REUNITED AT LAST Heartwarming moment parents are reunited with their abducted son 38 YEARS after he was snatched as a toddler”.

Conclusion

Fact Crescendo Cambodia found that the photo attached with the above-mentioned claims was false. The above photo has nothing to do with the loss of the dragonfish. This photo factually was a moment when elderly parents are reunited with their son after he was abducted as a toddler nearly four decades ago since 1982.
