A photo of a crowd in front of a perfume shop in a supermarket has been posted. On social media, there were claims that this was an incident of more than 5 hours of congestion in Chip Mong Noro Mall in Phnom Penh. Such claims are distributed and have mixed reactions from consumers. However, fact-finding by Fact Crescendo Cambodia found that the above claim was misleading.

This is about our investigation of this claim.

Social Media Claim

On September 21, 2023, a Facebook user posted three photos which one of the photos shows a large crowd. These photos are attached to the claim that this is what happened at the Chip Mong Noro Mall in Phnom Penh.

The same Facebook page also stated that the reason why so many people lined up for hours was to buy Dior perfume. This claim has been shared many times by social media users, along with comments and mixed reactions as well.

The following is a snapshot that describes “The first horrific experience that queued for five hours at Chip Mong Noro Mall to buy this Dior perfume”.

Fact Check

Fact Crescendo Cambodia reviewed and verified the above claim through the Google Reverse Image Search application, which brings us to the following facts:

The photo, which has the exact same shape, was found and posted on the Global Times website on January 11, 2021, which is not related to the purchase of Dior perfume. The following is an image from the website above; written in English as “Chinese supermarkets are becoming the largest in the world”.

The same view can be found on Getty Images, a major audio-visual website. The above website does not confirm or indicate that this is a view of the Dior perfume shop in Chip Mong Noro Mall in Phnom Penh; on the other hand, this is a view of the Louis Vuitton store in the International Finance Centre (IFC) in Shanghai, China, taken on December 31, 2020.
